A leading organic estate at the gateway to the Côte de Nuits, shaping the future of Marsannay with precision and sustainability.

The story

Located at the northern entrance to the Côte de Nuits, Château de Marsannay farms 40 hectares of organically cultivated vines, including many of the appellation’s most promising climats. Though rooted in long-standing Burgundian tradition, the estate has become a model for a new generation, producers committed to biodiversity, scientific research, and climate-responsive viticulture. Organic certification was completed in 2021, reflecting a philosophy centred on soil health, thoughtful farming, and long-term sustainability.

In the vineyard

The estate’s holdings span 28 key terroirs in Marsannay, along with parcels in prestigious Côte de Nuits sites such as Chambertin, Ruchottes-Chambertin, Clos de Vougeot, and Echezeaux. Fourteen Marsannay climats are expected to receive Premier Cru status, half of which are already farmed organically by the domaine.

Viticultural work focuses on living soils and vine longevity:

  • Pruning guided by sap-flow principles (Poussard)
  • Horse-ploughing in select parcels
  • Green manures, on-site compost, and hedgerow plantings to support biodiversity
  • Plant-based preparations and minimal soil disturbance

The domaine also collaborates with researchers from INRAE, the University of Dijon, and the Gest network to deepen understanding of local terroirs and vine health in a warming climate.

In the cellar

Harvesting is done by hand across more than 100 plots, with rigorous sorting to preserve purity. Whole clusters are used in the finest climats, and fermentations unfold gently over two to three weeks with an emphasis on infusion rather than aggressive extraction. After pressing, wines mature in oak barrels in deep underground cellars where temperature and humidity remain naturally stable. Regular tastings guide the élevage until each cuvée is ready to express its full potential.

The result is a collection that balances concentration with elegance: Pinot Noirs marked by depth and finesse, and whites shaped by clarity and minerality.
