An authentic family winery crafting mineral-driven Sancerre wines with precision and heart.
The story
Domaine Pierre Riffault is a family-run estate in Verdigny, one of the most celebrated villages in the Sancerre appellation of France’s Loire Valley. The story began with Bertrand Riffault’s grandfather, who combined goat farming and winemaking, as was common in the region at the time. In the 1980s, Pierre Riffault shifted the family’s focus entirely to wine, moving away from livestock to concentrate on the quality and expression of the vineyards. Since 2005, Bertrand Riffault has led the domaine, representing the new generation of Sancerre winemakers. The estate spans about 11 hectares, divided into around twenty small parcels scattered across the rolling hills that overlook the Loire River.
The wines
The Riffault family produces a focused collection that captures the essence of Sancerre’s terroir:
Sancerre Blanc: A crisp and vibrant expression of Sauvignon Blanc, marked by citrus, white flowers, and a lingering saline finish.
Sancerre Rosé: Crafted from Pinot Noir, this dry rosé is elegant and refreshing, perfect for summer pairings.
Sancerre Rouge: From old-vine Pinot Noir, a silky and nuanced red wine showing red cherry, spice, and fine minerality.
Each wine reflects a commitment to low-intervention winemaking, letting nature guide the process from vine to bottle.
In the vineyard
The vineyards are planted mainly with Sauvignon Blanc (≈ 9.5 ha) and a smaller portion with Pinot Noir (≈ 1.5 ha). The vines thrive on the region’s classic soils of flint (“silex”), clay-limestone (“caillottes”), and marl (“terres blanches”), which lend the wines their distinctive freshness and minerality. Bertrand has refined his father’s approach by slowing down the pressing process and allowing the grapes more time to reveal their true character, resulting in wines of precision and depth. Today, he continues his family’s philosophy of crafting authentic, terroir-driven wines that reflect the landscape and traditions of Sancerre. Wines of clarity, balance, and quiet elegance. There’s no showmanship here, just honest, graceful wines made by a family who lets the vineyard do the talking. For those who value character over fame and craft over mass production, this is Sancerre at its purest: simple, soulful, and unforgettable.
